The Cal 401 in the Carl Brashear model adds a small seconds. It’s a fitting tribute to Brashear, this bronze case, but it is also a reminder of just how young SCUBA diving is. It’s fitting, then, that this is a bronze watch, as Brashear’s early career involved diving in bronze and brass helmets which look jarringly antiquated. His life and career remain inspirations not only for the cause of racial equality but also for human tenacity more generally.
